The Three Type of Automotive Battery Cable

The three types of automotive battery cable include SGT, SGW, and STX. It is a heavy-duty single-core cable and is used for the interconnection of battery terminals and the starters, alternators, and main fuse boxes or ground in many vehicles. Automotive Battery cables use multi stranded copper wire and have durable PVC insulation able to withstand fuel, oils, and chemicals. The automotive battery cable complies with SAE J-1127. With a voltage rating of 60 volts DC and a temperature rating of -50°C to 105°C.



SGT Battery Cables


SGT battery cable is a low voltage PVC insulation suitable for temperatures between -40°C and 105°C. SGT wire is sized between 6 US wire gauge and 4/0 AWG, with fewer and thicker conductor strands, making it a relatively stiff wire with no change in shape after installation. It is suitable for all automotive high current applications.


SGW Battery Cables


SGW battery cables have heat-resistant cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation. The insulation can withstand high temperatures up to 125 °C. Smaller strands are used in this wire construction, all of which are more flexible than other wires. The application is similar to SGT but requires the full support of this cable.


STX Battery Cable


STX battery cable is a rigid xlpe insulated wire with a similar number and size of strands to SGT wire. It is suitable for high current automotive applications and under-hood temperatures in modern vehicles. Its operating temperature range is -40°C to 125°C.
